We Have A New Senior Associate Rector! And More ❤️

New Senior Associate Rector for St. James

Dear Friends,

I have great news. We have a new senior associate rector! His name is The Rev. Tim Hartley, and he is currently serving as senior associate rector at Church of Our Saviour in the San Gabriel Valley. Tim+ is a very talented and dynamic priest, equally strong in preaching, pastoral skills, mission and outreach, and with a background in business. I am so excited to have this wonderful colleague coming aboard, and so happy that the Holy Spirit has called him here. Father Tim has written you a message which follows my own.

The first day for Tim will be Tuesday, October 13, and his first Sunday with us will be African Fellowship Sunday on October 18. What a joyous introduction to our community! In the meantime, he will be saying goodbye to the lovely people of Our Saviour and completing projects there.

I am thankful for this exciting new chapter.

Peace and blessings,
Kate+

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER TIM:

I’m thrilled to be joining St James’ in-the-City - a parish whose beautiful liturgy, diversity, and outward-facing love for our unhoused neighbors drew me in from my very first visit. I look forward to working with Mother Kate and getting to know each of you in the months ahead.

Bishop’s Visit September 13th

We are so looking forward to a visit from our new Bishop, The Right Rev. Antonio Gallardo Lucena on September 13. In addition to preaching, he will confirm and receive members of the English speaking and Korean speaking congregations. We also will have baptisms, which require no training, so, if you or your child would like to be baptized, there is still time - just reach out to me. And, we have one more choice. This one is very beautiful. In the Episcopal Church, Reaffirmation is a rite for already-confirmed Episcopalians who wish to publicly renew their baptismal vows during a bishop's visit. Sometimes people drift away, and it is a chance to affirm our return - a holy homecoming. Let me know if you would be interested in baptism or reaffirmation at: kcress@stjla.org

Meeting with LA Voice Sept 13

Next Sunday, September 13, after our 10:30 service and coffee hour, I invite you to join in another meeting with our friend Carlos Rodriguez from LA Voice. At this meeting, I will provide an update on vestry member Martin Nwogu, and Carlos will update us on pending immigration legislation, and help us plan our own visit to Adelanto Detention Center. He will share about an upcoming interfaith pilgrimage to shine a light on conditions at Adelanto. I hope you can join us upstairs in the Vestry Room after service on the 13th.

Next Godly Play Class Will Take Place on September 20th

Godly Play, a fun class for our St. James children, will be every 1st and 3rd Sunday during 10:30am service! Parents may drop off their children ages 3 and up at Godly Play in the Parish Hall before 10:30AM service for a child-focused lesson. Children under the age of 3 may attend with a trusted adult. Two adult volunteers will be present, and parents will be asked to sign a consent form. Children will be returned to their parents in the church by adult volunteers by the time of announcements. Come join us this Sunday for fun, child-centered lessons and activities!
