See You at African Sunday (with Guest Preacher Rev. Galvin Brewington-Mathis), and More!

African Fellowship Sunday

I am so excited for this coming weekend when we celebrate African Fellowship Sunday. This is one of my favorite moments of our year here at St. James. During the service you will hear beautiful music, an exciting guest preacher, and then you will be warmly invited to cross the courtyard for a delicious lunch and celebration! Plan to come!!

Visiting Preacher Rev. Galvin Brewington-Mathis Will Join Us This Sunday

I am excited to be joining you all in worship for the African Fellowship Sunday celebration! I serve in ministry with Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church and School as School Chaplain and Ministry Associate. I am from South Central Los Angeles and grew up in the Black Pentecostal tradition, which is where I discovered my call to pastoral ministry.

Throughout the last decade, I served in a variety of ministry roles as a musician (drums, percussion), campus minister, pastoral fellow, and hospital chaplain. I completed my Bachelors degree from UC Berkeley in 2014 and Master of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary in 2022. I enjoy theatre, drumming, singing, playing with students at recess, and family time with my wife (Tyler) and toddler (Noah).

The Rev. Tim Hartley Begins at St. James

It has been a wonderful week here at Saint James as our new senior associate rector, the Rev. Tim Hartley, has begun his ministry. He has attended soup kitchens, a stewardship meeting, an HVAC discussion, school chapel, and so much more. And most of all he cannot wait to meet all of you. Please greet him this Sunday at his first services here at St. James!

Godly Play Class Returns This Sunday October 18

Our Collaboration with LA Voice Continues

I hope you will join our friend Carlos Rodriguez and me this coming Wednesday night on Zoom for our next meeting. Below see a letter to you from Carlos with all the details. Kate+

Dear St. James friends,

A quick reminder that our next St. James organizing meeting is one week away. Rev. Kate and I would love to see you there.

Wednesday, October 21

7:00 to 8:30pm

On Zoom:https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85139160801?pwd=OaxN3CzCm9IMme0AUQ3phaLmM1N7OS.1&jst=2

This summer, you wrote letters, listened to Molly Murray’s testimony from Adelanto, and showed what it looks like when a congregation finds its public voice. Next week, we’ll carry that same faith into the election and take more steps around immigration.

Together we will:

  1. Watch a short video from Bishop Antonio on Adelanto
  2. Hear an update on a possible Adelanto visit
  3. Get an update on immigration bills in Sacramento
  4. Learn about the propositions on our ballot through LA Voice’s Faith Votes
  5. Make a plan to vote and help the people we love vote too

Ballots are arriving now, so this is the perfect time to come together. Feel free to bring a friend or family member from the congregation.

With reports of increased immigration enforcement across California, this gathering feels especially timely. Tomorrow, LA Voice’s Executive Director, Dr. Charity Chandler-Cole, will join CHIRLA and community partners at a press conference calling for unity and preparedness. We’ll share more about where things stand when we meet.

One more invitation: Tacos, Tenants & Tomorrow

The following Monday, LA Voice’s Faith in Housing team is hosting a housing policy party. Come learn about Proposition 1, where the State Senate District 26(the district St. James is a part of) candidates stand on it, and Roadmap Home, a new organizing framework for tackling the housing and homelessness crisis in our county. There will be tacos, a DJ, and Policy Poker!

Monday, October 26

5:00 to 7:00pm

St. Paul’s Commons, 840 Echo Park Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90026

RSVP: https://bit.ly/FVttt

The flyer is attached. Please share it with anyone who cares about housing in our city.

If you haven’t yet, please reply to let me know you’ll be there next Wednesday.

With gratitude,

Kate+
